Abstract
In this chapter, we define the average and its types, i.e., mathematical averages which include the arithmetic mean, geometric mean, harmonic mean, median and mode. Also, we show when and
where these averages are suitable to be used. Position measures, namely quartiles, deciles and percentiles
also have been discussed. This chapter also gives techniques to measure the spread of the data around
the average, these measures include range, quartile deviations, mean deviation, standard deviations and
measures of asymmetry and peakedness of the data. The procedures for all these measures are outlined
by SPSS.
Keywords: Arithmetic mean, Geometric mean, Harmonic mean, Standard deviation, Bowleys coefficient of skewness, Kurtosis.
