Abstract

Low cost batteries are required in order to advance towards smart electric grids that integrate discontinuous energy flow from renewable sources such as solar energy and wind power. For these specific applications, moving beyond lithium batteries to sodium is an advantageous step that offers cost-effectiveness being sodium, unlike lithium, one of the more abundant elements on Earth. This paper gives a rapid glimpse at sodium-ion batteries emphasizing their peculiarities compared to lithium-ion batteries and analyzing some recent studies in the field.

Keywords: Sodium-ion batteries, sodium-ion intercalation chemistry, carbonaceous electrodes, graphitic electrodes, free-standing, binder-free electrodes.
