Abstract
In recent times, plant extracted oils have been proved more beneficial in pharmaceutical industries in comparison to the synthetic products as these plants contain biologically active substances which have shown a varied variety of therapeutic effects. The sideeffects of synthetic drugs and their resistance in various pathogens have led to a gradual increase in the use of plants in traditional medicinal methods. All encompassing research has been conducted to explore the medicinal value of the plant extracts. Extracts of Cyperus scariosus have been widely used as anti-hyperglycemic, anti-nociceptive, hepato-protective, anti-fungal, plant growth regulator, insecticidal and ovicidal agent, etc. Its main constituents are terpenoids, steroids, hydrocarbon, flavonoids and saponin which are imperative ingredients of several medicaments used in aboriginal system of medicine. This review article will provide an overview on the compounds isolated from C. scariosus and convincing pharmaceutical properties exhibited by the plant.
Keywords: Cyperene, Cyperus scariosus, isopatchoulenone, sesquiterpene.
