Abstract
Gymnema sylvestre R.Br. is an important medicinal plant traditionally used as an antidiabetic agent. Excessive use of the plant has resulted in its mass depletion from the natural habitat. In the present work, flavonoids were identified from the plant parts and callus culture. Different colored callus was obtained using various concentrations of hormones. The flavonoids (quercetin and kaempferol) were identified using chromatographic and spectral studies. Total flavonoid content was found to be more in aerial parts as compared to the callus tissue. However, antioxidant potential, in terms of DPPH scavenging activity, was more in callus as compared to the leaves.
