含硫次生代谢产物是植物来源的物质中相对较小的一组。目前的审查集中在其神经保护特性。报告了一系列体外和体内研究获得的结果。在芥子油苷中,含硫代谢物,葡糖硫氰酸酯,萝卜硫烷和异硫氰酸酯中的各种化合物被证明是在此背景下进行了更多的研究,并显示出作为神经系统疾病如氧化应激,炎症和凋亡。大蒜因其具有促进健康的活性的含硫成分而广为人知,其药用特性自古以来就广为人知。在最近的研究中,由于直接和间接的抗氧化特性,调节细胞凋亡介体和抑制淀粉样蛋白的形成,大蒜成分被证明对神经保护具有活性。从天然来源分离出的首个二巯基癸酸二氢天冬氨酸有效抑制炎症和氧化过程,这是神经退行性疾病的发病机理的重要因素,不仅因为其抗氧化和清除自由基的特性,而且还因为它可能下调了神经递质的表达。几种小胶质细胞来源的炎症介质。血清铁酸代表从胎牛血清提取物中分离出的含硫动物源性次生代谢产物的罕见情况。它被证明可有效抑制ROS的产生以及多种炎症和凋亡介质的表达,并在星形胶质细胞中表现出细胞营养特性,从而促进了星状过程。最后,还报道了硫化氢的性质,因为近年来它被认为是信号分子和调节神经元死亡或存活的介体。它可能是半胱氨酸的内源性产生,也可能是含硫的次生代谢物(主要是大蒜中的次生代谢物)释放的。
