Abstract
In this work, the critical design factors in the development of an adapter capable of enabling the use of projectiles that are of diameters less than the optimal 0.5 inches (in ballistics, a projectile having a half inch diameter is commonly called a caliber .50 projectile) are explored. This recently- patented slug adapter enables the users of the standard caliber .50 disruptor (the Mk 2 disruptor) to successfully implement sub-caliber .50 projectiles. There are three critical design factors explored in this work: 1) projectile support during launch, 2) gas pressure reduction during launch and 3) adapter failure during projectile impact.
