Abstract
Dr. Grzegorz Bazylak (b. 1953, Wroclaw, Poland) received his M.Sc. degree in food chemistry (1979) and Ph.D. degree in technical sciences (1990) from the Faculty of Food Chemistry and Biotechnology of the Technical University of Lodz (Lodz, Poland). From 1979 - 1991, he was research scientist, instructor of chemistry and, finally, adjunct professor of separation sciences (1990/1991) in the Division of Bioinorganic and Analytical Chemistry, Institute of Fundamental Food Chemistry at the Technical University of Lodz. His postdoctoral studies were carried out in the Human Nutrition Division of the Hygienics Department at the Medical University of Lodz (Lodz, Poland) where he held the position of director of the Biochromatographic Laboratory and adjunct professor of analytical sciences. Since 1997, Dr. Bazylak has been assistant professor of separation sciences and medicinal chemometry in the Department of General Chemistry, Institute of Physiology and Biochemistry, Medical University of Lodz (Lodz, Poland). With a scholarship from the Dutch Foreign Office, Dr. Bazylak was a course fellow at the Centre for Nutrition and Epidemiology, Wageningen Agricultural University (Wageningen, Netherlands) during 1994. In 1995, he was a visiting fellow of Department Environmental Medicine, Karolinska Institute (Stockholm, Sweden) on a scholarship from the Swedish Institute (Stockholm, Sweden), In 1996 he received a scholarship from the British Council (London, UK) which enabled him to study with Professor Colin F. Poole at the Centre of Analytical Chemistry at the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine (South Kensington, London, UK). Since 1991, Dr. Bazylak has been a member of the Scientific Board at ORAM Research and Development Centre of Switching Devices in Lodz (Poland). In 1997, he co-founded the Polish Supramolecular Chemistry Network Foundation (Warsaw, Poland), where he currently serves as a permanent member of the Establishers Council. In 1999 he was distinguished by membership in the Research Board of Advisors at the American Biographical Institute (Raleigh, NC, USA). Dr. Bazylak is an author of approximately 60 full-length scientific papers, more than 50 conference presentations and coauthor of handbooks (in Polish) Trace Analysis of Toxic Components in Food-Stuffs (Lodz, 1992) and Laboratory Manual for Bioinorganic Chemistry (Lodz, 2000). In 1997 he served as the co-chairman of a plenary session at the 9th International Symposium on Chiral Discrimination (Nagoya, Japan). His scientific achievements include quantitative characterization of topography of heterogeneity centers in magnesium oxide and magnesium carbonate adsorbents; development of analytical procedures for determination of carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in dispersing mineral oils, cosmetic rawmaterials and by-products; invention of helically distorted chiral selectors for the enantioselective HPLC; contributions to chemometrically aided characterization of alkanolamines as lysosomotropic agents and enzyme inhibitors; and design of micromachined chromatographic systems mimicking disrupted adrenergic receptor. His current research interests include combinatorial design of chiral selectors for the nanoscale separation of racemic drugs mixtures; modeling and optimization of chiral separation phenomena in HPLC and CE systems; implementation of chromatographic methodologies for high throughput screening of drugs candidates and metabolites; propagation of dissipative hydrophobicity in self-organized supramolecular species; chemometric studies on fungicides bioactivity; and chemical composition profiles of Ocimum basilicum L. He is a member of the Polish Chemical Society (Poland), Chromatographic Society (UK) and New York Academy of Sciences (USA). He is also the author of four poetry books (in Polish) and since 1998 a member of the Editorial Board of monthly published all-Polish literary journal Przeglad Artystyczno-Literacki (Artistic & Literature Review).
