Among different types of nanoparticles, SiO2 nanoparticles have attracted great attention of researchers because of their simple preparation methods and broad range of industrial applications. The remarkable properties of mesoporous SiO2 nanoparticles convert them to a good candidate for the development of efficient and reusable catalysts in synthetic reactions. Investigation of the various literature methodologies on the preparation and functionalization of silica nanoparticles as solid supported catalysts could help to discover their types with improved size, morphology and catalytic reactivity. Functionalized SiO2 nanoparticles were applied as organometallic catalysts, oxidative catalysts, acid catalysts, base catalysts and chiral catalysts in wide array of synthetic reactions such as Ugi-Smiles reaction, Suzuki- Miyaura reaction, Mizoroki-Heck reaction, Mannich reaction, aldol reaction, multicomponent reactions, oxidation and dehydration reactions and so on. A greater understanding of the relationship between different functionalized mesoporous SiO2 nanoparticles and their catalytic performances leads to the progress in catalytic synthesis researches. This review provides an overview on the synthesis and functionalization of SiO2 nanoparticles and their catalytic applications. Keywords: SiO2 nanoparticles, solid supported catalysts, functionalization, catalytic efficiency, catalytic reactions.
