Abstract
The objective of this review is to analyze several of the almost countless applications in which artificial neural networks (ANNs) are being exploited in the biochemical field. In biochemistry, numerous non-linear processes have to be dealt with, and that is precisely where ANNs excel. Therefore, ANNs can be seen as great candidates for obtaining correct mathematical algorithms of biochemical procedures that are difficult to study through classic statistical methods. Fermentation processes, environmental sciences, and biomedical applications are some of the fields in which ANNs are being used, and all three of them will be analyzed in this review. The study of cancer through the application of ANN methodology will be addressed in detail due to its vast worldwide impact. Specific studies on each of these themes, developed by various research groups, will also be examined in order to acknowledge the great estimating power of ANNs.
