Abstract
We propose fast block-based motion estimations using adaptive search range control mechanisms for the hierarchical B structure in scalable video coding (SVC). The hierarchical B structure in SVC was developed and adopted for the base-quality layer in the multi-layered coding structure. To develop an efficient motion estimation method, we consider three kinds of adaptive search range and motion model schemes to improve the speed while maintaining reliable image quality. Also we review the existing methods through some patents and papers. We verify the performance of the proposed schemes up to 78% with small loss of the quality through analysis of experimental results.
