Abstract: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of zinc endopeptidases, regulated by endogenous tissue inhibitors (TIMPs) and inducer (EMMPRIN). The demonstration of a functional role of MMPs in pulmonary diseases raises the possibility of therapeutic intervention targeting MMP/TIMP balance to prevent pathological processes.
